Never too late to share

Hey AIESEC!!

Ching Yee here!! Honestly, it is kind of late to share something that had happened way long ago, but I still want to share anyways.

At the end of February, I received an email from Cecilia with the title “YOU ARE SELECTED!” Then, I start wondering what on earth that I had done to be the SELECTED one. The email stated that there will be a meeting, so I went for it.

That meeting day, I got to know William and Vincent. 3 of them had told us this meeting is to tell us that we are the selected ones to carry out a recruitment drive the following week in TBS. Well, a project needs a leader to let it to run on, but being new, no one stepped up to volunteer to be the OCP. Suddenly, Cecilia looked at me and said “Ching Yee, you be the OCP lar…” so, I was appointed to be the OCP for the March RD just like that.

I was quite worried at first as I am just a 2 month old college student without any experience dealing with anything in college and also to work with people who is elder than me. Anyway, I think that I managed my tasks and dealt with my team mates quite well, although I received a lot of help from the seniors.

The interesting part was the period where we started to recruit members. At first, Hazel (one of my team mates) and I were quite nervous on approaching to strangers, especially those who are much older than us. We afraid of being rejected and embarassed. BUT this was our responsibility to promote AIESEC to the others. At first, it was really really hard to face the students and to promote. Luckily, that time was not the peak lunch period, so we somehow managed to “warm up” ourselves by approaching some students who were alone. Then, as time passed, we actually started to promote AIESEC to bigger groups of students. I have to admit here, that friendships do influence a lot in decision making. At the end of the first day of RD, we actually successfully recruited about 50 to 70 members.

During RD, I actually did something embarrassing. As I mentioned earlier in the “warm up” session, I tried to be brave to approach people. Then, I saw 3 girls walk pass, and one of them look familiar. Then, I asked the girl who looks familiar to me “Are you interested in joining AIESEC?” She replies “Sure, it has been so long that I didn’t heard someone ask me to join AIESEC.” At first, I didn’t get what she meant until she walked passed and Vincent told me that she is Geraldine, the President of AIESEC Malaysia. No wonder she looks familiar to me.

Another scenario sounds like this. I saw a guy standing in front of the booth. He looks like he was very interested in AIESEC, so I thought of further explaining to him. Bla bla bla… after the explanation, I asked him to leave his contact number on the list. He refused but I insisted. After writing down his contact, I continued on recruiting members. Some time later, I saw the guy pass his name card to Hazel. Since I am so busy body, I asked her what name card he gave her. Then…… I realised that the guy was Melvin, the ex-president of AIESEC in Taylor's. The funny thing is that most of the BOD were at the booth when I was insisting that Melvin left his contact!

Well, so that was my experience. I really enjoyed the whole process of this RD. Through this, I had actually gained a lot of fun and wonderful experiences that one should try in their life…

Message to my team mates: Thanks for your support!!!

The Battle for "Tomorrow"

Like what most Senior AIESECers in TUC do, they went missing after stepping down from the Executive Board. However, I am an exception for that.

Back in the year 2007, when my term as a Vice President of Human Resource almost ended, I was in a deep thought whether or not I should continue my term in 2008. I looked back on what I had contributed to AIESEC in TUC during my term and was not satisfied. I wanted to do more. However, in AIESEC, it does not mean that you can contribute ONLY if you are in the Board. You are able to contribute back to your LC even if you are merely a member! The best thing is AIESEC gives more opportunities to members than those in the Board. Therefore, it was then I decided to step down to be known as a de facto Director as well as senior AIESECer.

As a senior AIESECer, I can see a lot of opportunities waiting for me to grab. Opportunities will not come to you if you are not taking the initiative to look for them. This year, like any other Local Committees in Malaysia, AIESEC TUC is taking up its very first initiative. We will be running ‘Tomorrow’, a Project Based on Exchange. I took up the courage to take up Organising Committee President position.

Obviously, there will be tons of obstacles waiting for me, since it is LC TUC’s first battle, but I am not afraid as I am not alone. A team of 9 soldiers, CP9 (it is just a name), are joining this battle along with me and back in our headquarter, we have our strong Colonel Tan Sook Theng along with her 9 loyal Lieutenants to support us.

Therefore, hereby, it is my honor to introduce my soldiers to all of you:

1. Corporal Vincent Xu
Two words; hyper and committed.

2. Corporal Dixon Khoo
A person who knows how to differentiate between war time and fun time. A very approachable and friendly as a puppy, so afraid not. Do approach him to share his weapons and provisions. However, a lazy fellow due to being ‘slow’ in nature, but will be able to complete given mission in crisis in time.

3. Corporal Lim Eu Ginn
A soldier who is NOT a perfectionist as he believes that nothing can be done to perfection. Taking the first step and showing commitment during the process is more important compared to achieving the ‘perfect’ end product (roger that!). He embraces failures but stated that failure is not the opposite if success. The opposite of success is ‘giving up’ the moment one tastes failure.

4. Private Michelle Wong Ching Yee
She seems to be a “quiet” person but once she got on hold of machine gun, she will shoot non-stop. She can be straight forward and well, everyone has weaknesses so, there is no exception for her. If you find her irritating, let her know (or you won’t be able to accomplish your mission) as she is very willing to improve in her battle skills and that she will try her very best to change to suite your battle strategy.

5. Private Ng Mann Dee
This female soldier is approachable when she is unarmed, critical when she is armed and she has never parted with her walkie-talkie but guess what? She used to work part-time as a clown. It can be one of our strategies to deceive our enemies!

6. Private Wong Kong Hui
This is a very humble soldier who claimed himself to be an ordinary and easy-going person. C’mon! You are no longer ordinary once you joined this army. Anyway, he hopes to learn from the rest of the soldiers in this team so soldiers, do share your battle experiences and skills with him. We need to support and help each other in order to grow together.

7. Private Vivian Kuan
A very optimistic and perfectionist female soldier of ours who seeks for joy in everything (wonder if she enjoys battles) because she view it as a necessity. She likes shiny stuff (she will be our last option to design our uniform) and that for her, dance is love (how about marching?).

8. Private Timothy Low
Claimed to be an ordinary soldier with the intention to help out AIESEC TUC in the PBoX and that he is very looking forward to working with all of us (Worry not, soldier, our team is very diversified and rest assure that you will definitely learn a lot from us. How about dancing from Private Vivian?).

9. Private Vincent Lim
Opposite to our aforementioned Corporal Lim Eu Ginn, when it comes to serious work, this soldier is almost a perfectionist. He enjoys hanging out and battling with people (be extra cautious when you are armed).

Dixon, Kong Hui, Vincent Xu, Eu Ginn, Mann Dee, Timothy, Angelina, Ching Yee
MIA: Vivian and Vincent Lim

These are the great soldiers that I am going to work with and I am really excited. We are a strong and tough soldiers so, do look forward to the outcome of our battle!

An inspiring message from the PAI of 07/08

In my recent escapade to Tokyo, Japan for the very awesome Asia Pacific eXchange Leadership Development Seminar (APXLDS), I got the chance to personally meet the current President of AIESEC International (PAI), Gabriela Albescu, or more fondly known as Gabiza. A very, very down-to-earth person; despite her vast experience in AIESEC. It was nice to not only listen to her share her stories, but to talk and share with her as well!

So. I've actually got a message from her for AIESEC in Malaysia, so here goes:

Feel free to pass this video around to any AIESECers you know! :)

my feelings toward AIESEC

To my surprise, I have joined AIESEC for 6 months. I was elected as EB last October and I started my term officially on 1st January 08. Starting of my term, I told most of the team, ”I will ONLY spend 1 year in AIESEC and move on. I will NEVER consider going further. “
3 months has passes, and guess what? I don’t want my term to end. The time passes so fast. Can I stop the clock at this point of time and remain it forever? I know I don’t have the opportunity to continue my term as EB as I will be graduating end of this year. Of cause you are always welcome to join AIESEC Malaysia or other opportunities. However, I have my own plans to pursue. Sadly, I can’t apply for AIESEC Malaysia. I start thinking “why didn’t I join AIESEC few years ago?”

I said “I will NEVER consider going further” Guess WHAT? I am going SAC this coming Saturday. SAC – student assessment center, a step that I have to go through before I can go for AIESEC’s International eXchange Program (a life changing internship experience in overseas) WHY? Because I want to gain more knowledge and enhance my interpersonal skill and also gain extra experience in the working life so that I get myself prepare to face any challenges ahead in future. I want to carry on my AIESEC experience; the life changing experience that will have a great impact on me.

I want to have experience in conferences and projects in other countries so that I can contribute back to Malaysia especially to my LC. I am not saying that I am not learning in other organization such as Kuala Lumpur Basketball Association. I feel sad because I have joined AIESEC too late and I missed so many learning opportunities. Now, as a final year student, I have to balance my studies, thus how am I supposed to go for international conference? What a waste right? Better join AIESEC now!!!!

I started imagine the last day of my term, what will I do? Cry? Heartbreaking? For all I know, I will not be satisfied.[But I know definitely not going to be happy]. (though I will feel happy seeing another person to take over my position). AND I know I will miss my team!!! I have been in so many organizations, worked with so many teams before; this team is the FIRST that make me take them so seriously. I care about them, I want to protect them, I want to see them, talk to them and I miss them when I don’t see them.

Team, do you all know that my motivation comes from you all and you all make me stay in AIESEC.

Sook Theng (LCP) – Thanks for all the time we spent in GE and those talks that we had. Appreciate it so much when you talk to me and your sms. Haha.
Suat May (VPER) – I know about AIESEC because of YOU!!! Is fun to play with you … haha ...
Ke Vin (VPFA) – Don’t know since when I like to play and have fun with you. Started talking crap.
Ka Wei (VPX) – My direct boss. It has be great working with you. You have helped me a lot. Can’t imagine how I would be without you in the team. Appreciate that extremely much
Cecilia (DoTM) – The girl that I always disturb at night on msn. She always motivate me, share with me.
William (DoTM) – We have been working in PASS for few years and now we are working in a team again.
Daniel (DoC) – Always provide free joke and help me in photoshop even in midnight. Appreciate that!!!
Julie (DoER) – helped me a lot in Pbox’s proposal. Enjoyed moments chatting on msn and marketing trips
Siew Jhoong (DoOGX) – Always talk nonsense with me and I enjoyed those time when we were guessing the secret of the game in LCPM.
Vincent (executive) – He has been pushing me so hard. He is so willing to learn and he helped my department so much.

Team, I don’t want to do a long one here. I still have LLDS, Nat Con etc with you all!!! I will do a more touching one at the end of my term.

(without Seda, the 1st intern I met during my term)

My experience in AIESEC has been GREAT and IMPACTFUL!!! I make friend with 6 interns who are under our LC from 6 different countries (with uncountable interns from elsewhere).

I love every single moment that I spent with them. I don’t mind travelling to meet them because they are my FRIENDS!! I worry about them and I know I will miss them when they are going back.

KB - the guy in white colour shirt. He stayed in my house for his first day in Malaysia. That was my first time hosting an intern. OMG!!! I love it so much and I want to host more interns.
AND they make me feel like going exchange (Yes, I am taking action).

Today, I went to Midvalley Career Fair to promote our exchange program. Has anyone experienced approaching about 50 companies to explain our program? Do you think that it is easy? You want to try? Try it and you know, is not easy. Will you be able to present a program to HR Manager? I spend almost 6 hours there and I learned a lot.

Tell me if you know any organization that can provide me more than what I can get from AIESEC?

Talk to me if you want to know more!!

Regards,
Issac – The Director of Incoming Exchange
012-2989077, issac.phang@gmail.com

Through the eyes of a young AIESECer

The leadership and team-building workshop ended with a feast of mee siam and teh tarik. On top of indulging in the food, we exchanged numbers and further interacted with each other. I could feel a great sense of achievement as I walked out of the multipurpose hall to the carpark. Not because the workshop was boring and I managed to endure it. But because I was able to unlearn-relearn and moved myself from unconscious incompetence to conscious incompetence.

The event was overall a great experience. I did not exactly change overnight, but I could feel a slight difference in the way I view leadership, teamwork and motivation.

Taken by a night jogger on our way out to the carpark.

The event, like most human interactions, started on a cold note. There wasn’t much interactions except for a few people who already knew each other. However, the ice was broken as soon as the event commenced and we were brought through a series of ice-breaking games.
Our speakers for that day were Tim and Adele. Tim, a man full of humor and experience, is our main speaker. He was able to combine the dry topic of self-development and witty jokes with good precise, making the workshop a brilliant success.

Adele, a lady with a commanding voice, was Tim’s partner. She conducted much of the activities and gave us vital advices and feedbacks when the need arises. The two speakers worked well together. They complemented each other and were about experts in this field. Their goal at the end of the workshop was to shift us from not knowing what we don't know to knowing what we don't know. I thought they did a rather good job in achieving that goal. The activities they planned were creative and helpful in bringing across learning ideas of leadership, teamwork and motivation. I bet we all thoroughly enjoyed them and learnt some great deals. Of course, the enjoyment came not only from the paradigm-shifting learning journey of leadership, teamwork and motivation, but also the beginnings of new friendships. AIESEC is a big international organization, consisted of many individuals. Individuals who come together to learn more about how the world operates. And for an organization to work well, not only must there be a good management team, but also good team members for individuals are building blocks of an organization. I am glad to find out that AIESEC members are fun, friendly and helpful. And also glad to get to know many senior AIESECers through this event, I have personally gained many precious insights of my own abilities and capabilities in the field of leadership and working in a team.

Firstly, I feel that it takes courage to take the role of a leader. One can speak up in a group but that doesn’t mean he is a leader. It takes more than that. He should be able to stand up and take control of the group and lead, not just voicing out his opinions. Secondly, through the various activities, I have learnt that communication is very important in a team. We can have conflicts and arguments but ultimately we need to sit down, understand each others' point of view and address the issues.Lastly, I learnt the differences between problems and issues. A good management team attacks the issues instead of the many problems that may surface on a daily basis. Problems dissolve on their own when the issue causing it in the first place is solved. Of course, these are only a few examples of the many valuable lessons I have taken from this workshop. However to include all of them here will transform this post into a naggy self-help article.

Thus, I will stop here. If you have read until thus far, you may observe something obvious. Since the workshop was about leadership, teamwork and motivation, how come there wasn’t any mention of the activities that spiced up the event. This is due to a promise we made to Tim and Adele. A promise to keep our glasses intact. We were told not to reveal the details of the activities. So if you are interested in finding out more, you more contact learnatvantage and join one of their workshops as soon as possible.

Hands-on experience is always better than stories that you hear from people.
