My MaidenTry
Upon "The lecture has ended, you may go home now", instead of going home, I rushed off to AIESEC Malaysia office in PJ to fetch my guests for the day-- Bong Hyun (an intern from South Korea) and Airff (Non-Corporate Relations Manager of AIESEC Malaysia). We were joined by another intern who just arrived the day before. The weather was exceptionally hot and the traffic was pretty heavy, but it was a worthwhile trip ;) At 3.40pm, I was the first to arrive. By 4pm, the number of attendees paled in comparison to the first and second gathering. I thought to myself "After all that I've put in to prepare for today, are these the only people who'd witness my effort?" Then again, I thought "Hey! Smaller crowd, more personal attention. I can conduct my sessions even more effectively!" I remained calm and kept my enthusiasm kickin'. Surprisingly, I didn't feel at all panic with the attendance rate. Perhaps it was because my goal was to deliver my best to my members. It did not matter to me how many turned up, but how many left the room with an experience (though brief) to bring home. It is my wish to see that they find relevance in AIESEC, to allow themselves to learn, develop, and grow. At 4.30pm, the number of people at the gathering was just nice- not too crowded nor too empty. The agenda started with a brief ice-breaking session, then "A Step into the Past: History of AIESEC" and followed by a sneak peek to "An AIESEC Culture: Square Dance". To my delight, the members on the floor asked for more! It's been a while since AIESEC in TUC found members who'd not shy away from dances :P We got Ariff to lead 'Tunak-Tunak'-- a square dance created by some fellow Malaysian AIESECers. We carried on the second half of the agenda with a personal development session focusing on "Being Proactive". It's something I've always known but never had a word for it until I attended the Central Region AIESEC Malaysia Talent Management workshop last week. I found great relevance in this topic towards my personal growth as a youth and decided to share the impact it made on me to my members today. You see, it's easy to be proactive, but to make it a habit, you gotta be consistent. Self-reflection helps ;) Following the session was Bong Hyun's country presentation. He's the very first intern I managed to match and host for the AIESEC International Program. And guess what, it is his birthday today! Right when he ended his session, we surprised him with a short slide presentation, a cake, and of course, a 'Happy Corner' (an AIESEC tradition) :D After AG, we headed on to Italiannies at Sunway Pyramid for a triple birthday celebration of the 'March Babies'-- Me (a week ago), Bong Hyun (today), and William (4 days later). There, we met up with a few other interns from El Salvador, Costa Rica, Greece, and Russia. How often do you get to celebrate your birthday with a few 'countries'? ;) I'm so glad to be given the opportunity to not only host the AIESEC Gathering (AG) but to also conduct two sessions on my own. It was my maiden attempt. I'd rate my performance an average. There are lots of room for improvement and I can't wait to host another AG to put those improvement into actions. I am an AIESECer and I have done myself proud today! Yours truly, Sook Theng President of AIESEC TUC -A very fulfilling Wednesday, 26 March 2008, 11.59pm-

From a baby AIESECer...
‘HEY AIESEC! What's up!’ These were the first few words or shouts that I heard during my first AIESEC gathering (AG). In my head, I was thinking, ‘Whoa, these people have a lot of spirit and energy in them!’ And I liked it ever since. It's like THE place for me to step out of my box, and be who I am or be who I want to be. From the first moment I joined AIESEC, until now, it has been 2 years. And it is the 3rd year now. I still remember my first Local Leadership Development Seminar, for which I was the Organising Committee President (OCP). My first time in a local conference… It was an experience, really! We learned about AIESEC, had teambuilding activities, had fun with the facilitators as well, and I remember that time we went mamak at night for supper. For the first few months, I was still blur about AIESEC. I still couldn't explain AIESEC in words, and I couldn't even get AIESEC spelled correctly! Now, come to think of it, I think I could have achieved more if I understood AIESEC earlier. I should have taken the initiative to find out more about AIESEC, and to mess around with the AIESEC seniors more. But it is all the enthusiasm I see in other people, and inspiring people that I meet that made me keep moving in AIESEC. There was this event that opened my eyes. My ex-president Melvin, brought me to Windows to the World, organised by AIESEC in UM. I was surprised to see the scale of the event, and I was wondering if I could ever run such a big event. It was a showcase of cultural performance by different countries and the emcees of the night were amazing. All of these happened in 2006, yet I can still remember them very well. Then, came more conferences and events that I attended, which opened my eyes even more. To name a few, there was the national leadership development seminar (NLDS), Recruitment Nights of other Local committees, AIESEC Gatherings, interns’ outings, Local Committee Planning Meet and more. I personally like to meet inspiring people. AIESEC gave me the chance to meet people from outside college. After exchanging opinions with them, I come to learn that I have much to learn and still much to go, and that my friends and I are still all boxed up in our own little world. I don’t know if anyone out there feels the same (do mail me to share with me cause I would like to know too :p). I have learnt a lot throughout my years with AIESEC. After realizing that, I decided to apply for Executive board 2007 in AIESEC TUC. I still remember on the day of election, and before giving my speech, how nervous I was… and I actually only prepared my speech on the day itself. I thought of just doing it in an impromptu way, but thankfully I did not do that. Okay, the next part is actually quite embarrassing. When I stepped into the room, filled with audience to deliver my speech, I started my first sentence loud and clear. THEN! My mind went blank. So, I actually stoned for a while, as I had to arrange my thoughts. So, I stoned for 1minute. Gosh, and phew, I did get back to the right track. Well, it was one heck of an experience! After I got elected as Director of Outgoing Exchange last year, in my mind, I was thinking that I would not want to run again for Executive Board in AIESEC TUC next term as I think that I would have learned enough. But, unbelievably, it changed when Election for Executive Board 2008 came. It got me thinking. I felt that I have not done enough for AIESEC, and I wish to do more to help AIESEC in TUC. And I could see that we have a strong team this year, and I feel that together as a team, we can achieve something in 2008. It wasn’t an easy decision I admit, but I am glad I took it, and I am glad to be working with the current team now. Soon I will be going for the Asia Pacific eXchange Leadership Development Seminar in Japan. Woohoo! I am paying for it myself. Yeah, it burned a big hole in my pocket, man, BUT I am sure it is worth the experience! I will post about it when I return to Malaysia! Stay tuned! I hope I have more time to blog...there's so much to share. Lee Ka Wei Vice President of Exchange

Hosting Carlos.
My Salvadorian guest arrived in KL on Sunday. For some entirely weird reason, I instantly felt comfortable with him, so the plans to host him at my place till the other two interns arrive got the green light. First thing we did? Attended my family dinner (extended family included too as the occasion was to have dinner with my aunt and uncle before they went back to UK!). Way to experience Malaysian culture straightaway eh! Haha. You know, hosting someone is really quite an experience. Especially when he's foreign, and a stranger. Well, initially that is. Over the course of four days, I really got to know Carlos and he turned out to be really really nice to talk to. So much so that I now feel strange that he's left because he was my nightly company when he was around. I think it's interesting, because I expected him to be a lot more different-coming from the OTHER end of the world, but it turns out that we're very similiar in many ways. Like, the way we think, and the music we listen to.. If it wasn't for his accent, I would so forget he's not local. You know what's really funny- one night while we were having our usual chat session, I took a look at his pictures and noticed that he had taken one of our Malaysian toilet (the squat one). And he said that he had NEVER seen one before and was asking me HOW WE USE IT. The worse part is, he didn't get the word 'squat' so we had a good laugh while he tried to get what I meant without having either of us demonstrate the 'squat' position. Haha. He was like "You do the eagle shit?" and I was like "What the heck is an eagle shit!!". HAHA. But another thing that's really cool is that I got a personal Spanish tutor. I believe I now have in my head about 50 Spanish words! Ok but I find Spanish so freaking hard to learn. So that was what it was like hosting Carlos. Unfortunately for him, I had classes and meetings most days so he didn't quite get a tour around KL, but then again, my LC is taking care of that when the other interns arrive! At least he got to experience what staying in a Malaysian home was like :) JULIE KUAN Director of External Relations, 2008

Our very first 2008 AIESEC Gathering!
"Cecilia, you look excited!" said Carlos, our Salvadorian intern.
He’d been watching us while we were preparing for the AIESEC Gathering. I had a BIG FAT smile on my face; I usually don’t have a smile this BIG all day long. This is truly because I knew that I was about to host our AIESEC gathering for the first time and I couldn’t wait to share more about AIESEC with the new members! When the clock struck 4 p.m sharp, I saw members coming in in groups, trailing behind each other into this small and tiny room of 7.23. Oh boy! There were a lot of them. I was left quite stoned as the crowd got bigger. The EBs even had to bring in extra chairs. Whoa! It’s amazing isn’t it? In fact, we broke the record! This is the biggest gathering we've had in our Local Committee; there were members from Metropolitan College, Segi College, Sunway College, SAM, CAL, ICPU, TBF, UNISA, UTS, UWE and ADP . *proud* ![]() The room was quite spacious before it hit 4 p.m. ![]() I thought this was the amount of people I will be adressing for the next 2 hours. It doesn't look that bad. But then a human hurricane came without notice! ![]() My team looked quite worried about the room condition; a room that was supposed to accomodate around 30 people ended up having to fit over 90 people... ![]() The silent sign! It's really useful to control the crowd especially in a HUGE one…*PHEW* Thanks AIESEC for creating such culture! Everything was smooth sailing in the beginning; however it got a little messy during ice-breaking due to the small and tiny room! I thought it would be good if we could start off the agenda with an AIESEC dance but looking at the room condition…arghh! Forget about it! Everyone would end up stepping on each other's toes. So we began the gathering with ice-breaking where they had to form a line according to their birth date without verbal communication; only body language allowed! ![]() Anyway the members did not successfully break the ice because the crowd was really really big and there were limited space to network around. Poor members had to cram, almost like sardine fish! ![]() They were all concentrating on the video that showed the history of AIESEC in Taylor’s University College. The Local Committee President of TUC, Tan Sook Theng gave a short welcome speech and explained further about the organization chart. “An organization cannot lose its team player”, hence the EBs got introduced and each and everyone of us explained what we were doing in our respective departments. ![]() In addition, we had reintegration of NLDS/MNC 2007! ![]() Vincent shared his experience during NLDS 2007 There were also updates on the upcoming events and projects of AIESEC TUC March 5, 6 Exchange Participant Recruitment Drive (EPRD) 10, 11 Recruitment Drive (RD) 12 Accenture Career Event 12, 13, 14 Info Session on Exchange 17-21 APXLDS (Japan) April 24 Career and Employment Fair 25 - 27 Local Leadership Development Seminar (LLDS) May Single Mothers’ Project with GE June - August Project Based On Exchange (PBOX) We are currently recruiting members into the following projects: Project Based on Exchange (PBOX) Local Leadership Development Seminar (LLDS) Career and Employment Fair (CEF) Recruitment Drive in March (RD) Exchange Participant Recruitment Drive (EPRD) Task Force for Departments Do approach any EBs to get involved, or watch out for more posts for updates! The gathering ended early due to unforeseen circumstances. ![]() A survey form was distributed so that we could improve our AIESEC gathering and also for us to get feedback from the members for future reference. Look at them! So keen and 'bersatu hati', filling in the form in such a unique way. ![]() Issac helping some members out! ![]() Some actually stayed back after the gathering to clear their doubts about AIESEC by having sessions with the EB members. Some even joined us for dinner later on, like Yindran, Calvin, Vivian and Edward. Phew! A long post, but overall I feel relieved for completing my task! NEXT AIESEC GATHERING will be on 12th of March. CECILIA WOON Director of Talent Management, 2008
